Fri. & Sat. in Kansas, Sun. in Nebraska
Mon., Jul. 18. 2005 12:56pm EDT
This weekend we return to both Kansas and Nebraska for the first time since August 2003. Here's the schedule (for full details, please see the concerts column of this week's newsletter or check the concerts section of the website):
Fri., July 22: Phillipsburg KS
Sat., July 23: El Dorado, KS (near Wichita)
Sun., July 24: Lincoln, NE
Ironically, although Kansas and Nebraska are next to each other, the last time around we did not play them the same weekend but a full week apart. Back then, we drove to Kansas the same weekend as Michigan, then drove home to Pennsylvania and flew the following weekend to Utah, Wyoming and Nebraska.
Although our August 2003 trips to Kansas and Nebraska were both uneventful, our previous trips to each state were hair raising.
In July 2003, our van broke down in Kansas, and it cost us $7000 for a new reconditioned engine, on top of the $300-plus it took to repair a gas pump we accidentally broke that same afternoon, the $300 for the new radiator earlier that afternoon, and the $75 for a new radiator at the start of the day. To be fair, we incurred those three earlier charges in Missouri. Then, on the trip home, we blew out the transmission, which cost another $2000. Total damages: approximately $10,000!
When we played in Gothenburg NE in October 2001, we had perhaps our most hair-raising experience as a band. On the way home, not too far from the concert, we stopped at a railroad crossing just in time to avoid being demolished by a train. It was all God's protection, too, because there was no warning light or bell or barrier, just open road! We couldn't believe it! And then on top of that, there were no Hostess Ho Ho's for Karl and Bill at the convenience store!
Hope to see you at one of those shows.
