Where does the term "born again" come from?

The most famous use of the term "born again" comes from Jesus Himself, when He was talking to Nicodemus:

John 3:3
In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again."

The Apostles Peter and Paul both also use the term in the verses below:

1 Peter 1:23
For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

Titus 3:5
He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
