ApologetiX: Concerts in PA & OH, New CD, Karl
Thu., Jun. 14. 2001 1:23am EDT

Howzit goin'?

J. Jackson, lead singer for ApologetiX (That Christian Parody Band) here. Lots of BIG news for you this time around!

1.California Revisited
2.Concerts This Weekend in PA (Friday), Ohio (Saturday) ... plus a three-hour set at Alive in Ohio next Wednesday!
3.Karl Comes On Board Full-Time
4.New ApologetiX CD
5.Updated Concert Schedule (New Concerts in KY, FL, OH, KS, MO, PA)
6.Prayer Requests

1. CALIFORNIA REVISITED

Well, California was lots of fun! We played near San Francisco and near Yosemite (no sign of Sam anywhere, though), and we can't wait to come back next month to Napa and to Legoland in San Diego! Special thanks to our chauffeurs, Scott Slagle and Duane Stansfield, who stuck with us through thick and thin and drove us all over the state. And, of course, thanks to Scott's wife Lorraine, who did so much to organize the concert in Fairfield on Saturday and take of the hospitality. Thanks also to Julie, John and Matt at Twelve Toes and Larry Gamble at KAAT for bringing us out to Oakhurst on Sunday. And thanks to all the new friends we made!

Thanks to all of you who were praying for my right ear which was totally stuffed up and in excruciating pain. Somehow God enabled me to do both concerts with no pain ... and my ear is finally starting to clear up, after three trips to two doctors! But please keep praying, because it's nowhere near where it needs to be.

One of the "highlights" of the trip had to be when one of our huge CD boxes (containing 180 CDs) fell off Scott's roof rack on the way back to the San Francisco airport and got absolutely obliterated by an 18-wheeler! Praise God it was a truck that ran into it and not some unsuspecting car, because somebody could have gotten hurt. As it was, the 18-wheeler didn't bother to stop, but we DID ... and spent the next 20 minutes picking up ApologetiX debris! We even got to ride in the car with the California Highway Patrol (CHiPs) who stopped to check on us, although Erik Estrada was no where to be found. I think he's working with the psychic friends network these days, so maybe that's just as well. As far as celebrities go, Karl says he did see Alanis Morissette at the San Francisco airport, and that makes the second flight we've made recently that brought us into the path of an artist whom we spoofed on our "Ticked" ("Rolling Clone") CD. In April, Coolio was on our flight to Dallas!

2. CONCERTS THIS WEEKEND IN PENNSYLVANIA AND OHIO

We'll be in Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh area) this Friday and Ohio on Saturday! Then, next Wednesday we do THREE sets (a three-hour block of music) at the Alive 2001 festival in Canton OH! DIRECTIONS >

From Pittsburgh, take Parkway East Rt. 376 to Rt. 22 E, into Murrysville. Continue through Murrysville, past McD's, past Sheetz. About 1 mile beyond Sheetz is a light with a Uni Mart there. Make a right at this light. Follow this road (Murrysville- Export) around the golf course (it actually makes big "S"). Follow it until Waugaman (spelling?). There is a stop light here that is not yet hooked up. This road is just past the shopping center on the left. Waugaman is a right hand turn. If you get to the "Triple D" auto parts, you went too far. Make a right onto Waugaman. At top of hill, go right onto Raymaley. Follow this road for about 2 miles, thru one stop sign. Church is on right. Church phone (724) 744-4760.

If you need other directions, go to mapblast.com and type in your start point and put in the church address as the final destination.

3. KARL COMES ON BOARD FULL TIME

Well, you can say it was an internship, apprenticeship, serfdom, indentured servanthood or whatever you want, but we felt that after a decade of working for ApologetiX on his own nickel, it was time for us to bring our lead guitarist/producer/webmaster (not to mention ApologetiX co-founder) Karl Messner on board as our second full-time employee. Seriously, folks, if anybody has ever paid his dues with a band, it's Karl, spending a decade's worth of free time after his regular jobs doing ApologetiX work ó recording, website design, concert promoting, design work, you name it. Karl's last day at his old job was last week.

Of course, Karl didn't really just gain a full-time job. He just left one full-time job, and kept the other full-time job with us that he already had! Congratulations, Karl! You've certainly earned it! If you'd like to congratulate Karl, his e-mail is karl@apologetix.com. And with the announcement in item #4, you're going to see that Karl's going to be very busy at his new full-time job.

4. NEW APOLOGETIX CD

We are pleased to announce that we have been hard at work writing and practicing songs (They're basically all finished lyrically) for our sixth CD, "Keep the Change." The CD is scheduled for a September 25 street date, but we've been making plans for it since last December. We'll soon start giving you clues about the songlist, as we did with "Spoofernatural" before its release. We are slated to record 19 songs, but we can't guarantee that all 19 will make the final cut. Please pray that they do! It'll depend on performance, and we've got a couple songs this time that are real challenges to sing. I can sing them on good days, but I need good health and lots of blessing! Like our previous CDs, this one will have a good mix of both classic and modern rock ... and it also includes two songs that are suitable for Christmas airplay (in the same vein as "Hotel Can't Afford Ya.")

Lyrically, I think it'll be our strongest effort yet. If you come to see us in concert this summer, you'll get a sneak preview of some of the songs, too! Please pray that we are able to meet all the deadlines that we have set for this project. We have grown to a point now where our CDs are in distributors' catalogs and expected by stores at specific times, so when we set a deadline for ourselves, we have to make sure we meet it. That's pretty intimidating sometimes, but we do love a challenge! Last year, we went into the studio in August to start recording "Spoofernatural," and it came out in late November, so we're basically running on about the same timetable as last time. And this time around, we have Karl 24 hours a day, plus we just get a great new recording system for our studio which should greatly facilitate and improve production techniques.

5. UPDATED CONCERT SCHEDULE

In the past week, we've added new concerts in Florida (July 21), Ohio (Aug 10) Pennsylvania (Sept 1 and 2), Kentucky (Sept 22), Missouri (Nov 16) and Kansas (Jan 19, 2002). Check it out:

6. PRAYER REQUESTS

Our drummer, Bill Rieger, has an 18-month old daughter, Rachel, who has been sick with the fever twice in the past two weeks. Please pray that she gets better quickly. Also, Bill asks, "Please pray for my eye. I woke up this morning and I can't see out of my right eye. It is red and irritated and swelling a little. Thanks!"

Our former drummer Fred Behanna asks that we pray for his mother: "She has been in declining health for a good six months and unfortunately it seems to be accelerating," Fred says. "She is filling up with fluid and also getting so weak she can't even stand for very long. Please keep her in your prayers. It doesn't look very good. She is 84 and has had a good life and been relatively healthy. However, when you see your mom slowly slipping away it is very difficult. My mom is just at that place in life where her body is giving out and she has quite a few serious life- threatening problems. She is still in the hospital but has had a couple of good days last week. Overall it's not looking real good though."

Our former drummer Bob Flaherty and his wife, Jill, are planning to move to South Carolina, where Jill will teach (the doctors have cleared her to go back to teaching, and they'll monitor the tumor in her brain to make sure there is no growth) and Bob hopes to attend seminary. Please keep them in your prayers. We're going to miss them like crazy!

Please also pray for my ear, which is still clogged up and still occasionally giving me earaches and headaches. My next doctor's appointment is next Thursday.

Thank you!

Apologetically,

J.
