5. Bible Reading: A Tip or Two and Testimony Too!

Seeing as we're in an apologetics-based Christian band that focuses on Bible teaching, we feel it's important for us to read our Bibles every day. (We thought it was important before we were in ApologetiX, too :) I'm in the middle of the book of Jeremiah right now.) Our lead guitarist and producer, Karl Messner, started a Bible reading program for our fans about five years ago, and he gets some great praise reports. Here's a recent one that we'd like to share with you from Daniel in Pensacola FL:

"I did it! My first time through! I'm so excited. I mean, I don't remember half of it, and I understand none of it completely, but at least now I've physically looked at every page of the Bible. It's something I never thought I would do. And it's something I'm going to keep doing, probably for life. Thanks so much for your encouragement.

"When I started 3 years ago, I wasn't even sure if I was a Christian. And now I'm looking into becoming a minister. That's the difference reading has made for me. So thanks for doing this reading thing, I don't know if you still do it at your shows, but I hope so ... But anyway, I wanted to say thanks, and God bless."

Editor's note: Some people who start reading their Bibles every day comment that they can't always remember what they read that morning. I heard of a pastor who pointed out that you don't always remember what you had for breakfast, either, but it still nourishes you, and it will still give you strength for later. As somebody who's been reading the Bible every day for 16 years now, I totally agree. You'd be amazed at the stuff you pick up and use later that you don't even consciously notice while you're reading.

And, you know, it doesn't take that long. If you start in Genesis and read three chapters a day (except for Psalms, which are shorter chapters, so you should read about 10 of those a day when you get there), you'll be finished in about a year. Or you can just read one Psalm a day in addition to your daily reading, and you'll be done in less than a year, and you'll also have read through the Psalms twice!

If you've never read the Bible before, you might want to read the New Testament first. Some people prefer starting in John (since it focuses on Jesus' deity and His mission to the world), others in Mark (since it's the shortest Gospel and allows you to get one under your belt the quickest) and others in Matthew (since it's the first book in the New Testament). Those are all good places to start, and the best advice we can give you is to never finish; keep on reading, even after you've made it through all 66 books. You'll learn more every time.

6. Encouraging Email of the Week

We get lots of encouraging emails, and we cherish every one. Here's one we'd like to pass on to you:

"My children started listening to your band on the radio on the way to work (They go to school with my husband.) They really liked your music so my husband bought the whole collection. Pretty soon yours was the only group we listened to for quite ahwile. After a few months we started listening to a few other groups, but not my son, Gabriel. He knows each of you and what part you play in the group, most of the words to the songs and he has 'sung' YHWH for a 5th Sunday sing. We even had him and two youth do a Sunday morning 'skit' of the Bethlehemian Rhapsody and he 'sang' it also for his music class in a public school. Many kids in our youth group are starting to listen to you also and their parents are really ENJOYING it.

"Your music often has led to conversations about Biblical passages and has sent me to look up verses or even stories I didn't know were in the Bible. It has sent my son to do the same, which thrills my soul. His two little brothers really like The Monkees and they sing along with your renditions. We are in the process of looking for the songs for the Karaoke machine so Gabe can put his own special spin on them --especially the 'They Say We Were Monkeys' song.

"We have emailed the words to those we know who aren't Christians and gotten favorable responses from them and have given many of your CDs to people who we know would enjoy the music and then say, 'What did that say?' and listen to them again. Thanks for following the Lord's leading and PRAISE GOD for the talents He has given you. We look forward to singing with you in Heaven, and hope to hear you sometime in person here on earth. Gabe will know all the words! We know God will continue to inspire and bless you." Denise Beasley

7. Equal Time for the Naysayers

Since it's an election year, I guess we should give equal time for the people who aren't big fans of what we're doing. Of course, we don't have enough space to include ALL of them :) Actually, we don't get very many complaining emails, but we do get some. Many of those are unprintable in a Christian newsletter, but the following one isn't. We just wanted to make sure you got a fair and balanced look at our email inbox.

"You stink. Well not just you, your entire band so don't take this too bad. i saw you at Paperfest in Kimberly Wisconsin. i actually left during the middle of please love the jews. Are you serious????????????? you were so horrible my mom made a sick face towards me, and we left. i could have enjoyed paperfest if you never set foot upon the stage. i become enraged when i think of you guys performing. I hope you get some sence knocked into you. I dont mind your passion for God, but it is so over zelous it makes me want to sell my soul to the devil so i could never hear you guys again. calm down, dont make music for bible thumping mindless slaves, and tone down the praising. let me know, because you have some talent, its is DEFENATLY not going in the right direction." Ernestine Whitman

Personally, I'm encouraged that Ernestine thought we had 'some' talent, and I'm even more encouraged that, whether she realized it or not, our music made enough of an impression on her that she didn't just refer to the song as a "Love Me Do" parody; she specifically said 'Please love the Jews.' I've said it before -- parody sticks with you, whether you want it to or not. Obviously we can't please everyone, but even if our tunes made Ernestine unhappy, it motivated her to go to our website and take the time to write. That's much better than just indifference. God's word doesn't come back to Him void without performing the purpose for which He sent it.

8. Upcoming Concerts

There are a lot more concerts in the works than the list below shows. Look for more summer/fall additions in other states in upcoming newsletters. And for those of you who've noticed our schedule has an awful lot of white space from October through December, have no fear; there's big stuff in the works that'll fill that space up rather nicely ... but we can't tell you about it just yet.

This list adds concerts frequently, so stay tuned for more info. For the full details on all of the concerts below, please go to http://www.apologetix.com/tour.html and scroll to the bottom.
