Huey Lewis & Square Dancing

A little-known fact about ApologetiX lead singer J. Jackson is that he took a square dancing class as one of his Phys Ed electives in college. Actually, the full title of the class was Folk & Square Dancing. He also took Bowling & Golf.
Some may say those are strange choices for sports, but (like so many others) J. patterned much of his life back then after 80's pop star Huey Lewis of Huey Lewis & the News. Lewis was an expert on sports, as is evidenced by the fact that his band's first number one album was called "Sports." It's obvious that Lewis considered both golf and square dancing to be sports, seeing as he named his follow-up album "Fore!" and it had a song on it called "Hip to Be Square."
Furthermore, considering the fact that members of the San Francisco 49ers football team (Joe Montana and Dwight Clark) sang background vocals on "Hip to Be Square," we can probably safely assume that football players consider square dancing a viable alternative to rougher contact sports like football.
But we digress. Let's get back to the future. What comes around, goes around, especially in square dancing. Here's an email we received from the Longacre family in Edmond OK after our concert in Mutual OK on November 6, 2004:
"It was awesome as usual. I can't put in words what your music has done for me. My family really likes you guys to and we hope to see you guys again in the near future. I wrote J. and told him that I use you guy's songs in square dance. I'm an amateur caller for our club and I have made two of your songs into singing calls, 'Fakey Shaky Parts,' and 'Old Time Romans Road.'
Example:
Circle left Just take those old directions off the shelf I'm sending us into the Bible belt Men star right inside and roll it round Allemande that corner lady, weave the town Don't try to take me to a different road Swing that girl and promenade and go But take me on the highway straight for the Lord I like that old time Romans road
Heads promenade half way and go Walk in the middle get four hands and then, Round that corner lady Docido, right and left thru Veer to the left, Farris wheel, square thru three Swing that corner promenade for me There's only one sure way to get me to God That way's the old time Romans road
Heads promenade half way and go Walk in the middle get four hands and then, Round that corner lady Docido, right and left thru Veer to the left, Farris wheel, square thru three Swing that corner promenade for me I rev my engines down the streets of gold That way's the old ……………..
Sides face Grand Square Romans 3:23 is what you read Then find verse 5:8 and 6:23 Then take Romans 10:9 to save your soul And that's the old time Romans road Four ladies promenade inside the ring Swing that girl promenade and go I rev my engines down the streets of gold With that old time Romans road
Sides promenade half way and go Walk in the middle get four hands and then, Round that corner lady Docido, right and left thru Veer to the left, Farris wheel, square thru three Swing that corner promenade for me There's only one sure way to get me to God That way's the old time Romans road
Sides promenade half way and go Walk in the middle get four hands and then, Round that corner lady Docido, right and left thru Veer to the left, Farris wheel, square thru three Swing that corner promenade for me I rev my engines down the streets of gold That way's the old …………………… Sides face Grand Square I like that old time Romans road That avenue it just saves your soul I read a missive 'bout the faith of old It's that old time Romans road Four ladies promenade inside the ring Swing that girl promenade and then I rev my engines down the streets of gold With that old time Romans road There's only one sure way to get me to God That way's the old time Romans road
You guys are truly awesome."
