ApX Drummer and Wife Injured in Motorcycle Accident
Wed., Aug. 31. 2022 6:02pm EDT

ApologetiX drummer Jimmy "Vegas" Tanner and his wife, Eve, were in a terrible accident late Saturday afternoon when the rear tire blew out on the motorcycle they were riding. Both sustained concussions and numerous other injuries, and Jimmy broke his left femur (thigh bone).

Broken femurs are notoriously painful. Furthermore, Eve says, "The people at the hospital described it as 'His femur bone exploded.' It wasn't just broken; it had exploded. His artery should have been snagged, but it wasn't."

Jimmy had surgery on Sunday. The doctors inserted two rods, by the knee and by the hip. He has since been discharged from the hospital but has a long road to recovery ahead. As a drummer, he's grateful it was his left leg (which is used for the high hat) rather than his right (which is used for the kick drum).

"I think what is important to share," says Eve, "is that the Lord has been with us every step of the way, and it's been evident right from the start."

Jimmy describes how the accident happened: "We were going about 50 mph. It felt like the tire went soft. And then it started to violently fishtail, and I was trying to keep the bike steady and to keep it from landing on her."

Eve adds the following: ""His leg was kind of the sacrifice he made in order for us to be alive. I was able to jump right up afterward, but Jimmy and the bike were in the opposite lane, and he couldn't get off the road because of the break.

"Two paramedics and a firefighter just happened to be driving by, and they got out and helped immediately. When he landed on the road, there was a red light for the opposite traffic, and that wasn't chance. Long story short, we know that the Lord was all over it, and even though it happened, it was clear."

"I am so glad we had helmets on," says Jimmy. "I remember my head hitting three times on the road."

He's in remarkably good spirits for a man who's been through so much: "The swelling has been going down every day. I can't bend my knee. It just feels like lead. I have a couple bruised ribs on my left side. They're not fractured or broken or anything. But if you bruise a rib, that's enough."

Jimmy also has swelling in other areas, but despite all that, he says, "I'm pretty much in #4-5 pain out of 10. So it's not too bad."

After the accident, Eve's pelvis had been bothering her, but she felt it pop (in a good way) Monday morning. In addition to the concussion and road rash, she hurt her left knee and her right ankle has a bump on it like a golf ball.

"She doesn't have anything broken," Jimmy says, "but she really got scraped up bad. I just have abrasions on my elbow."

The other band members got the news on Sunday afternoon, but we decided to wait a few days to give the family privacy and to see how things developed before officially announcing it to fans. Although we were shocked when we heard the news, we are grateful that our friends (who are like family to us) are alive.

Please join us in thanking God for His protection and asking for His healing touch upon the Tanners. "Thank you for all the prayers, Jimmy says. "We really appreciate it."
