Four Bass Players to the Rescue in Elizabethtown PA
Tue., Aug. 23. 2005 4:19am EDT

Q. How many bass players does it take to fill in for Keith Haynie?

A. Four bass players with 48 years of experience and 20 strings among them.

If you're waiting for the punch line, it's not a joke. We found out early Monday afternoon that Keith couldn't make it to our concert that night in Elizabethtown PA because of a family emergency (See this week's Prayer Request), so we sent out an S.O.S. to a select group of our friends and fans. When we arrived in E-town to set up for the concert, we were stunned to find six bass players waiting for us!

Two of them went home once they saw that things were under control, but four stayed, each with his own five-string bass. That allowed us to divide the work load, so we assigned each player four songs to learn in the three hours before show time. And they came through with flying colors! Make sure you check out the photos on the website.

Here's a little bit more about each of the guys:

FIRST BASS
Dave Fehr is an anesthesiologist from Hershey PA. He owns all of our CDs, but he assures us that he doesn't use them to help put his patients to sleep. Dave was the brave soul who opened the show with us, and he played with us on "We're in a Parody Band," "Christmasnite," "Hotel Can't Afford Ya," and "Enter Samson." Dave has 30 years of bass experience, and although it doesn't show on his face, it shows on his bass.

SECOND BASS
Next up was John Taylor, who hails from Harleysville PA and specializes in e-commerce. John has been playing the bass for 15 years, and he played with us on "JC's Mom," "Are You Gonna Be Ike's Girl," "Smooth Grandmama," and "Triune Godhead." His kids' favorite song is "Smooth Grandmama," so it was a dream come to true for John to play it in concert with ApologetiX. He's not the same John Taylor who plays bass for Duran Duran, but we're sure he could have filled in nicely for them, too.

THIRD BASS
Speaking of things that start with "Dur" and end with "an," Durelle Leamann was only two years old when Duran Duran had their first hit, but he's already racked up 10 years of bass experience. Although he was the youngest of the four bassists Monday night, Durelle is able to play about a dozen different instruments, and if he plays them all as well as he plays bass, that's even more impressive. Durelle is a music teacher from Lancaster PA, and played on "La Bible," "The Real Sin Savior," "Good News Bookie," and "Manger." And, yes, ladies, he's single :)

HOME PLATE
Like Durelle, Steve Reaggs is a music teacher in his mid-twenties. He's also in a band called called Leisure Van, which will soon be releasing its second CD. Steve is from Mt. Joy PA, and has three years of experience on bass and nine months of experience in marriage. He played on "I'm Gonna Feed (500 Mouths)," "All the Stalls Stink," and "He Really Got Mad," and he closed the show with us on "Love & Kisses."

Thanks also to our incredible group of volunteers and roadies, including Jenn, Greg, Heidi, Dayna, Nikki, Larry, Chelmsford, Uri, Evan, Brandon and everybody else. We couldn't have done it without you! After the event, the organizers informed us that they are already planning to book us for our fourth consecutive appearance at next year's event.

Thanks most of all to God, who supplies all our needs and is able to do exceedingly abundantly beyond all we ask or think (Philippians 4:19, Ephesians 3:20).
