Saturday in Irwin PA: A Sort of Homecoming
Wed., Feb. 23. 2005 11:17pm EST
This Saturday, we play a concert in Irwin PA, about 30 miles east of our home base in Pittsburgh. We're looking forward to seeing a lot of family members and old friends there.
The last time we played a concert in Irwin was five years ago. ApologetiX lead singer J. Jackson says, "I remember distinctly that one of the discussions we had while setting up that night was whether we should spoof Kid Rock's latest hit at the time, 'Only God Knows Why,' or his breakthrough hit, 'Cowboy.'"
The first time we played a concert in Irwin was 13 years ago. J. adds, "I remember distinctly that one of the discussions we had while setting up that night was whether the audience would like us or throw rotten vegetables at us."
You see, Irwin was the site of our very first concert as ApologetiX. It was Friday, March 27, 1992, at the Paradise Club, a Christian coffee house which had opened the previous August.
Well, if you've ever heard our song "Choirboy," you know what the outcome was five years ago. If you want to know what the outcome was 13 years ago, just look at our first 100 concerts. Irwin was the location of eight of our first 10 concerts, 24 of our first 50, and 46 of our first 100. Our 97th concert, October 15, 1994, was the last concert ever at the Paradise Club. Don't look for it. The building was unoccupied for a number of years and then, just like the famous Joni Mitchell/Neighborhood/Amy Grant/Counting Crows song, "they paved Paradise and they put up a parking lot."
But the rest of Irwin is still intact ... and ready to rock, we hope! We've given them five years to rest up. Hope to see you too!
