Music to File Taxes By: ApX Playlist for April 15
Fri., Apr. 13. 2018 2:26pm EDT
Maybe you don't fear Friday the 13th, but many Americans experience anxiety about April the 15th. That's the traditional U.S. income-tax filing deadline. Well, it's been "traditional" since 1954; before that, the date was March the 15th, but Congress pushed it forward a month, giving taxpayers extra time to recover from Christmas expenses.
In case you haven't heard, that deadline was pushed forward even more this year — to Tuesday, April the 17th — because the 15th falls on a Sunday and the 16th falls on Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in Washington, D.C. To celebrate, we made you an ApologetiX playlist to file taxes by:
1. So Render - Surrender - Cheap Trick (Recovery, Track #9)
2. Hey Zaccheus - Take It Easy - Eagles (Chosen Ones, Track #7)
3. Jericho - Vertigo - U2 (Wordplay, Track #12)
4. In Matthew 9 - I Feel Fine - Beatles (Isn't Wasn't Ain't, Track #16)
5. Death - Beth - KISS - (Soundproof, Track #17)
6. We Got the Feet - We Got the Beat - Go-Go's (Play Nice, Track #5)
Here's why those songs apply:
So Render is our retelling of what happened when people asked Jesus whether it was lawful to pay taxes to Caesar (Matthew 22:15-22, Mark 12:13-17, Luke 20:20-26). You can find a nice video of us performing it live at the Cup of Joy in Green Bay WI on November 21, 2009, at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8TPU0GdrH8
Hey Zaccheus is the short story (Luke 19:1-10) of one of two tax collectors Jesus famously visited for dinner. North San Juan Community Church in Nevada City CA posted a lyric video along with our recording at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKDa4lAevEk
Jericho isn't about Josh and the Big Wall; it's the story of Zaccheus again, told straight from the horse's mouth. Jesus was passing through Jericho when He met Zaccheus. One of our fans posted a dramatic video for this song at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xW9aJEkyddY
In Matthew 9 is about the other tax collector Jesus famously visited for dinner. His name was Matthew, but on casual-dress Fridays, the jeans he wore were always Levi's. :) We couldn't find a video for this one, but, given the fact that we recorded it back in '93, that may be for the best.
Death is about … duh … death! So what's it doing on this list? Well, as Ben Franklin said, "in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." Just as folks have found ways to get around taxes, Jesus showed us the Way to get around death! You can find another fan's lyric video for that at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VmdwtUUafk.
We Got the Feet is a bit of a stretch, but who doesn't like to stretch their feet once in a while? The original song we spoofed, "We Got the Beat," a #2 hit for the Go-Go's, was released on … wait for it … I.R.S. Records! ApX fan Kelly Davis produced and posted a super-creative cartoon video for that one at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZwJK6cwA5w.
